But the child abuser got away before he could be apprehended. Nevertheless, the photos have been posted to the police department’s Facebook page.
“We want to ensure the community this case is currently being investigated by our Detective Division,” the department said. They also said that Child Protective Service (CPS) “has been contacted per our policy and is also investigating this case.”
Although Burch thought what the man was doing was child abuse, the sergeant laughed and told her that the man “has the right to discipline his children.”
Burch also said that the sergeant claimed that in order for Texas to classify it as “abuse there had to be bodily injury to the child”.
Hundreds of people have contacted the department complaining that they should investigate. In response, Cleveland police issued the following statement on their Facebook page:
“The Cleveland Police Department has received numerous calls in regards to a child having her hair pulled last night at Cleveland Wal-Mart. We want to assure the community this case is currently being investigated by our Detective Division. CPS has been contacted per our policy and is also investigating this case. A joint investigation is currently being conducted by both agencies.”
Here’s how citizens responded:
“If that’s how he treats her in public can you imagine what he does behind closed doors.”
“It is unconscionable that your sergeant would have declined to investigate, and to have the gall to suggest this animal had the right to discipline his child that way.”
Do you think this man is just disciplining his little girl? Or should this be classified as child abuse in the state of Texas?
