Three children — a 7-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy and their 11-month-old brother — were taken into protective custody after police discovered they had been abandoned and padlocked in a feces- and garbage-filled house — a true “house of horrors,” according to NY Daily News.
The Herald reports that Amanda Foley, 32, and Mark Dorson, also 32, were sentenced to six months in jail and five years of probation after the children were found abandoned in deplorable conditions in Lake Stevens, Wash. In early 2015, a woman claiming Dorson had not completed the mechanical work she had paid him to do visited the house on multiple occasions to confront him. Reportedly, each time she demanded to speak to him, the 7-year-old would answer the door and say her parents were asleep. The woman suspected child neglect, which prompted her to call the police to investigate.
Lake Stevens police Detective Dean Thomas tells the Herald, “Patrol (officers) could hear little footsteps coming to the door and little footsteps walking away from the door,” and when the 7-year-old finally answered the door, she told them her parents were upstairs with the baby. Officers were able to persuade the girl to let them inside, where they were confronted with a “horrific” scene. Not only were there no adults present, but the Herald reports that the children were living in absolute squalor — there was no heat, no food, exposed wires, disconnected smoke detectors, and piles of garbage and feces strewn about the house.
According to the Herald, the 3-year-old was found under a piled of filth-ridden blankets and laundry on a couch, and King 5 News reports that the baby was discovered in a crib upstairs with a “temperature of 94.1 degrees,” was “hypothermic and dehydrated,” and he was in “the 2% range for his body weight.” The children were taken to the hospital for treatment and are expected to make a full recovery.
The house was later deemed uninhabitable; city code inspector Chad Osterholtzremarks, “You could just tell those kids raised themselves in there. … It’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen.”
Foley and Dorson were arrested on Feb. 3 and it was revealed that Foley was pregnant and admitted in court to using methamphetamine. The Herald reports that both parents have prior felony convictions and have a history with Child Protective Services.
