An Arkansas mom is fuming after her 4-year-old son was forced to eat hot sauce as a punishment at daycare.
When Melaina Whitley’s son, Tanner, came home early from Friendship Pediatric Services and started throwing up, she knew something was up.
“I thought maybe just like a stomach virus or something, but it only lasted about a day,” Whitley told KATV.
It didn’t take long before Tanner finally confessed to his mom that he had been given hot sauce at daycare as punishment for hitting a friend.
“When he said hot sauce, I thought maybe Pop Tarts, and I was like, ‘hot sauce?’ because I didn’t know he knew the word hot sauce, so I know she had to have told him, ‘I’m giving you hot sauce,’” Whitley said.
What’s even more shocking about this particular incident is that Friendship Pediatric Services is a daycare for children with special needs, and Tanner had been going for speech therapy.
“You just don’t expect that. They’re supposed to be qualified to work with special needs children, and they’re supposed know to not give hot sauce,” Whitley said.
Although she had already confronted the daycare about what happened, Whitley also decided to call police.
“I know when she was like, ‘Let me give you hot sauce,’ he didn’t just say, ‘Okay, cool,’ and open his mouth. It must have been forced because he wasn’t just like, ‘Here give me some hot sauce.’ He said he was crying and had to get water and it was nasty. I don’t know if this was the first time or he was the only child,” she said.
While police are still investigating, Whitley believes the teacher in question should be fired immediately.
“They should at least fire her, I think. Just anything, just something at all. I know for a fact she still works there,” she said.
