Whenever you travel abroad, it is always a good idea to try not to stand out too much. One of the most obvious things tourists do is to take pictures with locals. Whether you are posing with a gladiator at the Coliseum, or trekking up to a mountainside temple in Nepal, tourists just cannot stop themselves from mugging with the locals.
Which brings us to this funny story about a couple of western tourists in Thailand, and how they almost got rolled by the cutest little thieves you have ever seen. They were almost irresistible, but wait till you hear what they did.
An unidentified British tourist has posted an image to Reddit that purports to show two little girls caught in the act of picking his girlfriend’s pocket, while posing for a photo.
He says that he and his girlfriend were visiting Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai, a province located in Northern Thailand. Sunday night, while standing outside the temple, two little girls wearing traditional Thai costumes approached them about taking a picture together. The couple agreed and the little girls grabbed the woman’s arms.
The photo shows the woman smiling, with one of the adorable little girls clasping each of her arms. In the picture, it also appears that one of the kids is unclasping her wristwatch while they snapped the picture.
Demonstrating a remarkable lack of situational awareness and completely oblivious to the alleged heist, the couple did not notice what had happened until later when they were reviewing the pictures from their day. They do concede that they had had a little to drink before venturing to the temple steps, but examining the pictures helped them determine when and where the woman’s missing watch went.
People responded on Reddit saying things like ‘I’ve seen those little thieves before,” and “Holy c**p! I was tempted to ask for a photo with them when we saw them at the temple but didn’t want to be ‘that tourist’ and was also worried that their momager who was lingering around might scream at me for money if I went near them.”
One commenter even evaluated their technique “Notice how the thief is touching her hand in several places? It’s a pickpocket technique so that the mark gets accustomed to being touched by the thief and stops registering all of the touches,” and then continuing “so she didn’t notice her watch being snatched”
Another Reddit user, noticing the peculiar odds of so many Reddit users having interacted with these specific girls commented that the two little girls seemed to be the “two most popular child thieves in all of Asia.”
In another comment, more sympathetic to the girls, another user pointed out that “A thousand plus people visit that site daily. I’m pretty sure those girls are dressed up to simply take pictures with tourists for tips. It’s probably the family’s income.”
