Toddler Joshua Mann needed 200 stitches in his head and face after they were ripped open by a border collie.

The two year old was stroking his grandparents’ dog when it suddenly turned on him.

After his dad Mark Smith, 26, managed to rescue him from the pet’s jaws, Joshua needed two emergency operations. The boy, savaged as he visited his grandparents’ farm, has been scarred for life and will need more surgery before being allowed home from hospital.

His mum Lisa Mann, 23, who is separated from Mark, said yesterday: “I’ve been told he was just stroking it when suddenly the dog clamped its jaws around his head and started shaking him. His head was trapped and Mark punched the dog until it let go, but by then Joshua’s face and head were a mess.”

She added: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw him lying in hospital. You could actually put your hand into the inside of this mouth through his right cheek. It was horrifying.”

Lisa, of Brockworth, Glos, warned: “Any dog can turn and snap – you cannot trust them with children.” Threeyear-old collie Rossie, a working dog at Roger and Sue Smith’s farm in Andoversford, Glos, was put down after the horror last weekend.

Lisa reported the attack to the police. A force spokesman said: “We are currently looking into the matter and are communicating with the family and the RSPCA.”

Lawyer Annie Bradwell, 46, had her ear glued together in hospital after a fox attacked her as she slept in bed. The animal got into her house through a window in Fulham, West London.
